Durga Visarjan 2024 : Tradition, Timings, and Environmental Impact

After nine glorious nights of Navratri filled with joy, devotion, and play, Goddess Durga finally returns to her heavenly abode with Durga Visarjan on the 10th day of the festival. It’s a day of mixed feelings – joy for having celebrated the goddess’s arrival and sadness as she returns to her heavenly abode.

If you’ve ever been part of this ritual, you know it’s not just about immersing Maa Durga idols in water. It’s a celebration of faith, community, and love for the divine mother.

In today’s blog, we will learn more about Durga Visarjan 2024 – what it stands for when it happens, and how we can ensure that we don’t harm the environment while celebrating this auspicious day.

The Tradition of Durga Visarjan

The Tradition of Durga Visarjan

Durga Visarjan marks the end of Durga Puja, which is a five-day festival dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga celebrating her victory over the demon Mahishasura.

According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Maa Durga visits Earth during Navratri and the act of immersion symbolizes her departure from Earth back to her divine realm. The immersion, or "visarjan," often takes place on Vijayadashami, the 10th day of the festival, and is marked by grand processions, music, dance, and a lot of emotion.

During the processions, people carry beautifully crafted idols of Durga towards the rivers, lakes, or seas for immersion. A whole bunch of people from different communities come together for this ritual.

While the ritual marks the end of the puja, the day is more about bidding a heartfelt farewell to the goddess. Devotees pray to her, seeking her blessings for the year ahead and inviting her to return next year with renewed joy and happiness. It's a bittersweet moment, where devotees chant Asche Bochor Abar Hobe (Next year, it will happen again), affirming their faith in Durga’s return.

If you're planning to take part in Durga Visarjan in 2024, check the local timings in your area as these can vary slightly depending on regional customs.

The Environmental Impact of Durga Visarjan

The Environmental Impact of Durga Visarjan

Now, as beautiful as this tradition is, there’s another side to it that we can’t ignore: the environmental impact. With thousands of idols being immersed in water bodies across the country, there’s significant damage caused to the ecological system. This issue has sparked much-needed conversations about how we can balance tradition while being mindful of environmental responsibility.

Herein, the main concern arises from the use of plaster of Paris (PoP) and chemical-based paints that go into making idols. When these idols are immersed in rivers or lakes, they don’t dissolve quickly and become a leading cause of water pollution. The harmful chemicals from the paints poison aquatic life and degrade water quality, making it unsafe for humans and animals alike.

Eco-Friendly Approach for Durga Visarjan 2024

co-Friendly Approach for Durga Visarjan

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of this issue, and many people are seen taking steps toward eco-friendly celebrations. Here are a few ways in which you too can contribute to an environment-friendly Durga Visarjan in 2024:

  1. Go for Clay Idols: Traditionally, idols were made from clay, which easily dissolved in water without harming the environment. Hence, go looking for artisans who create clay idols, or urge your local pandals to make the switch.
  1. Artificial Immersion Tanks: In many cities, authorities have started offering artificial immersion tanks for visarjan. These tanks are specially designed to minimize the environmental impact. After the immersion, the materials are separated and recycled wherever possible. If your city offers this option, it’s a great way to celebrate responsibly.
  1. Clean-Up Drives: Join or organize post-visarjan clean-up drives. While many places are doing a great job in managing the aftermath, it never hurts to pitch in and ensure our water bodies remain clean and safe in the long run.

Conclusion

Durga Visarjan is a beautiful tradition that helps connect us to our roots and brings people together in celebration. But in today’s world, it's also a reminder that with every tradition comes responsibility – responsibility to care for the planet and protect the environment for future generations.

As we prepare for Durga Visarjan 2024, let's keep this balance in mind. By making small changes in how we celebrate, we can make sure that our devotion to the goddess is matched by our care for the earth.

If you're planning to participate in the celebrations this year, consider opting for eco-friendly choices.
